Your Powhow video library accepts m4v, mov, avi, wmv, flv, and mp4 format files. All uploaded files will be automatically converted in our system to MP4, the most universally accepted format across browsers, devices, and players. There is currently a 2 GB limit for any file you upload.
Size and Bit-Rate:
Powhow supports a Bitrate of up to 2500 kbps (1280x720). An hour long video encoded at 2,500 kbps should yield about a 1GB file- which will provide your clients with a great quality video. There is no need to upload full 1080 HD videos as anything larger will be down-sampled to improve the streaming quality for your clients. It will also take much longer to upload than necessary.
The larger your video- the longer it will take to upload to your studio. Assuming you have a base broadband plan of 1 Mbps Upload Speed (note-this is Megabits, not Megabytes), a 1GB video will take nearly 2 hours and 20 minutes to upload! Save yourself the time and bandwidth by compressing your video first before uploading. Learn How to Compress Your Videos for Optimal Playback/Upload.
Resolution, Bitrate, & File Size:
The file size of your video is directly linked to your resolution (output size) and the video's Bitrate. Some video encoding programs allow you to adjust these two parameters independently. Most commonly, we see videos that have the correct Output Size, but an overly high bitrate, which leads to files that take a long time to upload. By using a program like QuickTime or Handbrake, you can easily re-export the video to a standard format (to match the sizes in the chart below.) This will yield a smaller and more manageable file for both you and your clients with negligible impact on quality.
While Powhow will attempt to automatically optimize your videos for you, uploading a video that meets the suggested parameters above will yield the highest quality results. If videos are greater than 2500 kbit/sec bitrate or greater than 30 fps framerate, then Powhow will automatically down sample to a max of 2500 kbit/sec and 30 fps. However, if a video is less than these settings, Powhow will up-sample the video. Please see a list of standard sizes in the chart below.
